SAS Student Ambassador 2010 – 2nd Student from Malaysia Selected

SAS Student Ambassador 2

The SAS Student Ambassador Program is a competitive global program that recognizes and supports students from around the world who use SAS technologies in innovative ways benefiting their respective industries and fields of study. Annually SAS sponsors 10 selected students worldwide to present their paper at the SAS Global Forum. The selected students known as “SAS Student Ambassadors” are then given the opportunity to present their research paper to global audience.

In 2010, a student from Multimedia University (MMU) has been selected as a SAS Student Ambassador. Somaye Gharibvand, an Iranian pursuing her MBA and graduating in August 2010 will present her paper in Seattle, Washington, the venue for the Forum on April 11-14. Her paper titled “Financial Analysis Using SAS PROCS”, is using 3 types of Proc which are, PROC TIMESERIES, PROC FORECASTING and PROC UCM. Below is an extract from her research paper.

Previous SAS Student Ambassador

“The Financial services industry is interested in analyzing vast financial data including price trends from stock exchanges around the world. SAS analytical and graphical tools are extremely useful to enable statistical analysis of various financial data including stock price information. Time Series statistical method is a valuable approach for analysis of financial data. Time Series modeling involves trends, seasonality, cyclical behavior, and forecasting future trends using historical data collected at regular time intervals. Many advanced Time Series analysis procedures are available in SAS/ETS module. In this paper, three PROCs are shown: PROC TIMESERIES, PROC FORECASTING, and PROC UCM. The advanced features of SAS procedures were used to analyze Texas Instruments stock with TXN symbol. It will be demonstrated that PROC UCM (Unobserved Components Model) is better suited to analyze the stock price movements.”

Somaye is in fact the second student from Malaysia selected as a SAS Student Ambassador. The first was Azman Taa’, a PhD candidate from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), was selected for the SAS Student Ambassador Program in 2008 and presented his paper at the SAS Global Forum 2008 in San Antonio, Texas.

Interestingly, Somaye’s sister Lida, was also chosen as a SAS Student Ambassador in 2009, representing the US. Lida and Azman Taa’ had the opportunity to get acquainted in 2008 when she attending SAS Global Forum as a participant.

As this serves as a golden opportunity for exposure to many students, SAS Malaysia shall continue to promote this Student Ambassador Program with the objective that more students from Malaysia will have the opportunity to share their knowledge to a global audience.
