SAS and Institut Pertanian Bogor Bring Analytics and Big Data to the Statisticians 

Bogor  (Sep. 27, 2012)  – SAS supports Statistics Department of Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) in addressing complex problems in public sector issues through Statistics. How to use Statistics and big data will be highlighted as one the agenda at the 8th Statistika Ria held in Institut Pertanian Bogor on 29-30 September 2012. For 36 years, SAS has helped governments learn more about their countries, improve services for citizens and enhance commerce.  

As the leader in business analytics software and services, SAS understands the power of statistics. SAS software is used in 70 government statistics and census agencies around the world including The Australian Bureau of Statistics, The US Census Bureau, Statistics Norway, the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, Statistisches Bundesamt, and Statistics Denmark.

Government and practitioners of statistics and academia will together explore the role of statistics in driving right decision in various sectors like government, banking and financial industry. Among the speakers is Kristianus Yulianto, Consulting and Services Manager of SAS Indonesia, representative from Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), and Deni Irvani SSi, Researcher of Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI). 

SAS understands that statistics plays a critical role in determining public policy and improving human life. One of the examples, SAS helps Department of Housing and Urban Development of United States in determining whether its social programs are helping provide a better quality of life in the areas of education, health and employment. London Fire Brigade (LFB), the UK's largest fire service able to predict risk and drive prevention strategies aimed at reducing fires, death and injury in the UK capital.

"Currently, SAS Indonesia committed to support Statistics Department of IPB which is under SAS Academic Program that had been launched since 2011. Our mission in the program is helping universities in empowering young statistics professional of tomorrow with technology that in line with business analytics environment. We greatly support the 8th Statistika Ria in building high quality statistics graduates who understand the importance of analytics and increasing their productivity to global competition." said Erwin Sukiato, Country Manager of SAS Indonesia.

"In line with the agenda of the program, the big data is only interesting if you can derive analytical value from it and analytics can add significant value to big data and set the stage for smart organization. The broad experience of SAS illustrates the great range of possibilities of analytics in various sectors. During the seminar, SAS representative will explain further on how analytics with statistics included could analyze big data for better decision.” Erwin added.  

More than 300 academia and practitioners of statistics will discuss on how to analyze the exponential growth of big data – especially in public sectors – through analytics. One of the topics includes analytics' vital role in delivering smart government and thriving in the big data avalanche.

Sessions featuring representatives from across the government cover:

  • Using Analytics for Effective Decision in Public and Private Sectors.
  • Using Your Big Data to Make a Better Workforce for Tomorrow.
  • Using Analytics to Determine Public Policy in Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS).
  • Improving Big Data Analysis Techniques in Determining Public Policy.  

Dr. Ir. Hari Wijayanto, Head of Statistics Department of Institut Pertanian Bogor explained, "We believed that explosion of big data could help various sectors to determine the right decision of the organizations. But the problem is the ability of statistician to use, analyze and make sense of the big data. Meanwhile, there are companies that have big data and need graduates who can help them analyze the big data to support their business decision. These conditions are challenges and opportunities of statistician which should be tackled with technology support. We are pleasure to work together with SAS in handling the challenges."

Alan Duta Dinasty, Chairperson of 8th Statistika Ria said, "Through Statistik Ria program, we are trying to give new insight on the power of statistics and its implementation in public and economy sectors. This is the eight consecutive year program held by Himpunan Profesi Gamma Sigma Beta Institut Pertanian Bogor with five series of activities under Statistik Ria. They are National Seminar on Statistics, National Competition of Statistics, Achievement Motivation Training, Talkshow and Book Review."

About 8th Statistika Ria

Statistika Ria is an annual event of statistics students throughout Indonesia organized by the Association of professionalism and Statistics IPB or also known as Himpro Gamma Sigma Beta. This annual event has been going on seven times and this year's event will be the 8th one. Each year, the event gathering almost all statistics students all over Indonesia in National Statistics competition and compete the Turns Cup, Andi Hakim Nasoetion. This year, the event has been packed to be more interesting without eliminating statistics context as the main core. The event consists of National Statistics Seminar which is divided in two sessions, Talkshow on Green Economy, preview on Novel Best Seller Book "ibuk" by Iwan Setiawan and Statistics talkshow entitled "Understanding Statistics on Overseas Affairs". In addition, there are 3 types of competitions are held, the National Statistics Competition for Statistics and Mathematics students throughout Indonesia, the National Essay Competition for students and the general throughout Indonesia, Basic Statistics Competition for students of IPB who are not statistician but getting the courses of Statistics Statistical Methods. Hopefully, with organized activities, statisticians and the public will be better in understanding the importance of statistics that can provide solutions for the advancement of the nation.
