Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur uses SAS to perform regression,
multivariate and survival
analysis
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is one of
the premier institutions established by the Government of India. The
Institute aims at providing meaningful education, to conduct
original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership
in technological innovation for the industrial growth of the
country. The Institute which began functioning in the borrowed
building of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1959 with 100
students and a small faculty, today has its own sprawling
residential campus, with about 1450 undergraduate and 850
postgraduate students, 300 faculty and more than 1500 supporting
staff.
In addition to offering formal Undergraduate and Post-graduate
Programs, the Institute has been involved in continuing Education
and Research & Development in areas of value to both the Industry
and the Government. In a very short span, the Institute has attained
recognition as a major centre of learning in Engineering, Science
and several Inter-disciplinary areas.
Research & Development has been at the forefront of all academic and
non-academic initiatives undertaken by the Institute. Indian
Institute of Technology Kanpur today holds a leadership position for
excellence in technical education and training, and holds a leading
position in the areas of basic and applied research, both at the
national and international levels.
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur imparts training to students
so that they become competent and motivated engineers and
scientists. The Institute not only celebrates freedom of thought,
cultivates vision and encourages growth, but also inculcates human
values and concern for the environment and the society.
Living this philosophy of imparting training to students so that
they become competent and motivated leaders of tomorrow, the
Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Indian Institute of
Technology Kanpur strives to maintain high standards of teaching and
research in various branches of mathematics and statistics with a
unified approach which emphasizes both the pure and applied aspects.
The Department offers modern programmes of study leading to M.Sc.
and Ph.D. degrees. The course structure has been designed to be
flexible, so as to meet the needs of individual students.
The scope of these comprehensive and flexible programmes, apart from
training in fundamental principles of pure and applied mathematics
and statistics, also includes interaction with allied subjects in
other departments of the Institute. The Department encourages
cross-disciplinary trends with the help of expertise available at
this institute.
One important initiative in this direction was to introduce SAS in
the Masters of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctorate Programmes (Ph.D.) in
Statistics.
Explaining the rationale behind the choice of SAS, Prof. Debasis
Kundu, Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Indian Institute of
Technology Kanpur, said, “We were looking for a comprehensive
solution that can help in statistical analysis. We choose SAS as it
provides a comprehensive and exhaustive platform and
state-of-the-art solutions that meet our statistical analysis
needs”.
SAS Solutions help Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur perform
regression analysis (linear and non-linear), multivariate and
survival analysis.
Highlighting the strong statistical capabilities of SAS, Prof.
Debasis Kundu added, “SAS benefits us both quantitatively as well as
qualitatively depending on the problem areas. It helps us perform
all statistical analyses including regression analysis, multivariate
analysis and survival analysis. It also helps us perform sample
surveys.”
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has lived the promise of
imparting training to students so that they become competent and
motivated engineers and scientists.
According to Prof. Debasis Kundu, “We deployed SAS in our institute
to provide exposure to students with the state-of-the-art business
intelligence solution and to help students develop analytical
decision making ability, for achieving competitive business
advantage. We want our students to develop strong analytical &
quantitative capabilities, as this will help them make informed
business decisions in future.”
