SAS to expand high-performance computing offerings

Customers want to model their data across all departments and scenarios – not just a segment or sample – to get a more accurate, holistic perspective of their business and make better-informed decisions.

Mumbai, India  (Apr. 12, 2011)  –  SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, will expand its high-performance computing offerings with the introduction of SAS High-Performance Analytics, which will be available on a database appliance from EMC, the world leader in information infrastructure solutions.

Customers want to model their data across all departments and scenarios – not just a segment or sample – to get a more accurate, holistic perspective of their business and make better-informed decisions. This new offering from SAS on the EMC® Greenplum® Data Computing Appliance will provide an environment for customers to perform analytical exploration and development on all data to complement their regular analytic operations. Using current best-in-class technology, "Big Analytics" problems can take hours, or even days. With SAS High-Performance Analytics, many of these same problems will now run in seconds, enabling the development and management of more accurate predictive models.

"Analyzing large amounts of data quickly to get at answers that drive time-sensitive business decisions is a competitive differentiator in today's market," said Mr. Sudipta K Sen Regional Director – South East Asia CEO & Managing Director - SAS Institute (India) Pvt. Ltd"SAS is redefining 'in-memory processing.' By going beyond in-memory databases or in-memory OLAP and allowing complex analytical computations to run data in a parallel, shared memory environment, SAS delivers faster performance and scalability. Partnerships with companies that have leading database appliances like EMC Greenplum enable businesses to combine SAS' unique analytic capabilities with massively parallel platforms in a complete, purpose-built appliance."

Dan Vesset, Program Vice President of IDC's business analytics research, explains, "An increasingly sensor-based, mobile-enabled and instrumented environment – what IDC calls the Intelligent Economy – is driving big data trends, not just in terms of volume but also in type, complexity and rate. Capturing, analyzing and managing such dynamic data is increasingly viewed as a competitive advantage for organizations to solve a variety of complex problems – such as health care diagnostics, drug safety, fraud patterns and terrorist detection – and influence timely and better decisions."

For example, companies needing processes for customer retention analysis, experience optimization, marketing campaign management and cross-sell/up-sell can greatly benefit from such scalable analytics to drive real-time, next-best offers and customer engagement scenarios. When model fitting times are reduced from days to minutes and from hours to seconds, organizations can reduce costs and improve customer retention and profitability rates, along with growing their customer bases, all by using complete data sets instead of segmented samples.

"This powerful analytics combination is a complete 'big data' stack – complementary to the enterprise data warehouse – offering fast-loading, robust data management and complex analytics in a purpose-built environment. Our joint customers will gain from EMC's deep understanding of massively parallel processing architecture combined with SAS' deep expertise in analytics," summarized Bill Cook, General Manager and President of EMC's Data Computing Division.

The new SAS High-Performance Analytics is part of the SAS High-Performance Computing portfolio, which spans across in-database analytics, grid computing and in-memory analytics, and will be generally available on the EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance in fourth quarter 2011.

The latest developments in the SAS High-Performance Computing strategy were unveiled at SAS Global Forum, the world's largest gathering of SAS users, attended by more than 3,500 business and IT users of SAS software and solutions.
