Across British Columbia’s healthcare sector, there are differing perspectives on current issues facing the system and what the challenges might be in the future.
Like the blind men and the elephant story illustrates, each believe they see the whole problem, when in fact the information they have is limited by each participant’s role and perspective. Disagreements are understandable. System-wide healthcare decisions must be made with information from all perspectives, so that valuable time is spent solving the right problems.
In January 2009, SAS Canada released findings from a survey it commissioned Leger Marketing to conduct aimed at understanding the information gaps that exist between physicians and administrators in BC health care. This survey highlights the lack of common data and information available to all practitioners and decision makers to fully analyze and determine what decisions need to made, and where, to improve the state of healthcare in the province.
With the data management and analytical technologies that exist today, decisions can be supported and made by looking at data from across the entire spectrum, versus making decisions based only on the part of the elephant that is in front of you.
