Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (CEMIG)

Energy, Brazil
Focus: customized portal pages and advanced analytics

Responding to increasing demands for consistent, reliable electricity, the Brazilian government has imposed a broad regulatory framework to govern the buying and selling of power throughout the country. Regulations have placed increasing demands on Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (CEMIG) to leverage its information assets and derive the most from its historical data for business planning, sales forecasting, and the reduction of price volatility and market risks.

In recent years, CEMIG has used SAS Business Intelligence to understand new market trends, project future revenue and analyze electricity consumption to support Brazil’s continued economic growth.

Moving into 2008, CEMIG anticipates a broadening of its BI deployment with customized portal pages and advanced analytics. “With the SAS Information Delivery Portal, we will provide broader access to BI data throughout our organization,” says Marden Menezes, Manager of Planning at CEMIG.

“One key strategy for us will be to start analyzing and correlating greater volumes of georeference data with other data to create predictable models as we expand our electrical system. SAS BI will enable us to analyze our market, revenue sources, energy charges and short-term exposures in a volatile environment,” explains Menezes.

Armed with clean and consistent information, CEMIG anticipates its teams of professionals will be able to proactively plan and manage its infrastructure expansion, forecast future requirements and improve business operations. “By providing an ever-clearer picture of demand, sources and costs,” says Menzes, “SAS is helping us operate more efficiently and ensure greater consistency in Brazil’s energy supply.”
