Wisconsin Dept. of Revenue uses SAS® to improve revenue generation, efficiencyData warehouse enables more effective tax collection with fewer resourcesCARY, NC (Apr. 02, 2009) – The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) is increasing revenues by automating tasks and better data sharing. Wisconsin DOR uses software from SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, to bring in data from its audit and tax processing system and identify opportunities for more efficient collections. In the fourth quarter of 2008, the system processed more than 150,000 queries, more than double the previous quarter. Customizable reports delivered through a Web portal give some 500 users the answers they need to improve decision making. The time spent analyzing and identifying audit opportunities has been drastically reduced. The Wisconsin DOR estimates staff time savings of more than 1,600 hours since July 2008 and financial savings of more than $2 million. “Our information resource is in high demand across the organization to help us meet directives, initiatives and legislative mandates,” said Revenue Secretary Roger M. Ervin. “The SAS portal is integral for us to effectively deliver the right information to the right people in a timely manner.” The system draws from many data sources to offer a clear, multiyear, paperless view of the taxpayer, whether individual or corporate. Wisconsin DOR can thus prioritize collection opportunities, analyze complex sources of income and automate many processes. The agency is also analyzing property taxes, which can be difficult with data available only in aggregate and at the local level. Among other uses, the analysis can demonstrate the effectiveness of property tax relief programs on overall tax burden. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue was honored last week with a SAS Enterprise Excellence Award at SAS Global Forum, the largest annual SAS users group conference, attended by more than 3,000 business and IT users of SAS software and solutions.
