SAS to deliver in-database analytic scoring to health care insurers
SAS® Scoring Accelerator for DB2 will optimize business performance for companies like BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee
CARY, NC (Apr. 07, 2010) – The health care industry – like many others – is often overwhelmed by the vast amounts of customer data available. As part of its ongoing in-database efforts, SAS, the leader in business analytics software and services, has successfully engaged BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee in a pilot program embedding SAS Analytics within the company’s IBM DB2 enterprise data warehouse on IBM Power Systems.
SAS In-Database processing is a flexible, cost-effective way to manage increasing amounts of data by embedding SAS technology into databases. Companies can gain significant competitive advantage by centralizing data, reducing data movement and enabling customers to translate models and score data directly within their data warehouses. This leads to faster access to analytical results and more agile and accurate decisions that comply with governance requirements.
“This technology allows for rapid deployment of analytic models, as well as real-time scoring at the point of member engagement,” explains Nick Coussoule, CIO at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. “During the Limited Availability program, it became clear that we could focus our analytical efforts on modeling rather than on the manipulation of data or model deployment.”
By eliminating data movement between analytic models and databases, in-database processing reduces complexity and latency without jeopardizing reliability. The result is accurate information that drives critical decisions for operations, such as health insurance fraud and health and condition management. Companies can better detect claims fraud, avoid improper payments, identify at-risk patients and recommend financially sensible interventions. This flexible and efficient approach leverages customers’ data warehousing investments with SAS Business Analytics, letting customers focus on improving business processes and performance.
"It is critical that we help our customers, like BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, take advantage of the newest technology advances, such as in-database processing. This enables them to reduce data movement bottlenecks over their network for faster access to predictive results," said Keith Collins, SAS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. "SAS Scoring Accelerator for DB2, which will be widely available later this year, furthers efforts to integrate SAS Business Analytics across leading relational and nonrelational database management systems."
A representative from BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee will be talking more about the organization's experience with SAS in-database analytics on April 13 at SAS Global Forum, the largest annual SAS users group conference, attended by more than 3,000 business and IT users of SAS software and solutions.
For more than 30 years, SAS and IBM have collaborated to offer highly optimized solutions to more than 2,400 customers worldwide and recently renewed their alliance agreement through 2015.
