SAS helps revenue departments boost collections, compliance
Analytics leader launches tax collection and audit software for state and local governments
CARY, NC (Mar. 31, 2010) – For nearly 30 years, SAS has helped state and local departments of revenue (DOR) increase tax revenue collection, fight fraud and inform policy decisions. Now, to complement SAS’ robust offerings, the company has launched two solutions for audits and collections. Built on the SAS® Business Analytics Framework, the easily deployed SAS for Government Tax Audits and SAS for Government Tax Collections will help agencies improve tax collection and auditing.
Like many states, Wisconsin already uses SAS to improve tax processes. In the fourth quarter of 2008, Wisconsin’s DOR processed more than 150,000 queries – double the previous quarter.
Customizable reports delivered through a Web portal help some 500 users improve decision making and drastically reduce time spent analyzing and identifying audit opportunities. The Wisconsin DOR estimates saving more than 2,100 hours of staff time and $6.7 million since July 2008.
Other collections agencies use SAS to uncover tax fraud and identify nonfilers and underfilers. California’s largest tax-assessing and collection entity, the California Employment Development Department, collects $40 billion annually in state employment taxes from 1.2 million employers. It disburses an average $4.8 billion in unemployment benefits to 2.2 million claimants. The agency uses SAS to boost revenue by reducing tax fraud, identifying collectible cases and improving unemployment insurance fund solvency.
SAS for Government Tax Audits helps state and local revenue departments within the United States use analytics to screen and identify tax filings most likely to be underpaid and to effectively prioritize auditing resources. SAS for Government Tax Collections helps prioritize the collection of unpaid taxes and predict which actions will provide the highest return.
"These solutions, built on years of expertise with revenue departments, contain advanced analytical models that will help state and local governments maximize scarce resources and combat expanding tax gaps,” said Paula Joshi, General Manager, SAS State and Local Government Practice.
