SAS® EVAAS® for K-12 achieves millionth login

Software-as-a-service measures schooling effectiveness, student growth

CARY, NC  (Jun. 09, 2009)  –  Measuring schooling effectiveness is critical to improving education outcomes. SAS Education Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS) for K-12, which recently saw its 1-millionth login, is the choice for at least one school district in 20 states. Four states – Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina – use the software-as-a-service (SaaS) statewide.

SAS EVAAS for K-12 lets users analyze and report on student learning growth over the school year, a key metric in evaluating schooling effectiveness. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides $100 billion for education, making better evaluation a major emphasis.

“SAS EVAAS helps state-level officials, district administrators, principals and teachers to determine effective practices that accelerate student learning,” said Dr. Kristen S. Lewald, Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System Statewide Project Director. “In this era of accountability, decision makers should focus on the meaning of data, not management and analysis.”

SAS, the leader in business analytics, also offers SaaS solutions for higher education instruction, drug development, campaign management and professional training. Regardless of industry, SaaS allows quick deployment of new solutions, lower costs, prebuilt reports and easy, browser-based access.

With SAS EVAAS for K-12, states or districts send electronic data directly to SAS to be cleaned and analyzed. Results are reported via a secure Web application, a powerful but user-friendly diagnostic tool.

“SAS performs the heavy analyses – we don’t need statisticians, data analysts, Web developers or a help desk to deploy this to every district in Pennsylvania,” added Lewald.

The milestone login occurred in Tennessee, where Dr. William Sanders developed the EVAAS methodology more than 20 years ago. SAS EVAAS for K-12 is also used by the South Carolina Teacher Advancement Program (SCTAP)

"South Carolina's software-as-a-service implementation of SAS EVAAS has given us a comprehensive view of student achievement and schooling effectiveness while controlling IT-related costs," said Jason Culbertson, Executive Director of SCTAP. "The insights we've derived from analyzing years of data have led to more intelligent resource and instructional decisions that improve teaching and learning."
