SAS® supports instruction, administration for tech-savvy superintendentsAdvanced data analysis, engaging Web curriculum contribute to success in NC and KYCARY, NC (Apr. 15, 2009) – Two recipients of the 2009 eSchool News Tech-Savvy Superintendent Awards use SAS software to improve instruction and administration. Larry Price, Superintendent of Wilson County (NC) Schools, uses SAS Analytics to integrate and access data from across the district to make better decisions. Price and Tom Shelton, Superintendent of Daviess County (KY) Public Schools, are seeing great results from integrating SAS® Curriculum Pathways® into high school curriculum. Price was a key development partner for SAS OnDemand for K-12, a hosted solution providing superintendents and administrators in small- and medium-size districts essential data for reporting and analysis. Price used SAS to analyze more than 29,000 annual discipline infractions, producing a new approach to classroom discipline. “Combining the analytical power of SAS at the administrative level and SAS Curriculum Pathways at the instructional level has had a direct effect on student success,” said Price. For students in grades 8-14, SAS Curriculum Pathways covers the core disciplines of English, mathematics, social studies, science and Spanish. Aligned with state standards, its more than 200 InterActivities and 855 lessons apply technology-rich instruction to engage higher-order thinking skills. Price continued, “The use of SAS Curriculum Pathways in our school district grows as our teachers discover the power of the resources and activities within, and increase the quality of their instruction.” Both districts use SAS Curriculum Pathways in 1-to-1 computing environments, where every student and teacher has a laptop. At Hunt High School in Wilson, the number of dropouts decreased 42 percent, with substantially fewer student discipline incidents. All 3,200 high school students in Daviess County have 24/7 access to laptops and SAS Curriculum Pathways. Reaction among students and teachers has been enthusiastic. “Many of our teachers use SAS Curriculum Pathways on a daily basis to make learning come alive in the classroom,” said Shelton. “A true 21st century learning resource, our high school teachers enjoy it because it's content-driven and focused, and offers engaging ways to look at the material.” Designed for a wide range of classroom environments, technology capabilities and learning styles, SAS Curriculum Pathways can be used flexibly – in one-computer classrooms, virtual schools, small groups or 1-to-1 computing initiatives. Since 2001, the Tech-Savvy Superintendent Awards Program has honored K-12 educators who display exemplary vision in using technology to further the goals of educating today’s students and equip them with 21st century skills.
