SAS Customer Maine Medical Center Cited for Excellence in Business IntelligenceIDG’s Computerworld names winners and finalists of ‘Best Practices in Business Intelligence’ awardCARY, NC (Oct. 17, 2007) – Maine Medical Center (MMC), located in Portland, Maine, using software from business intelligence leader SAS, was named a finalist in the “Best Practices in Business Intelligence” awards program. The teaching hospital was honored at Computerworld’s Business Intelligence Perspectives conference for leaders in business intelligence and IT management. The award identifies and acknowledges excellence among users of business intelligence solutions and approaches. Recognized for its computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system, MMC designed to decrease medical errors, improve decision support and promote evidence-based medicine. While CPOE systems are commonplace, MMC’s system is unique in the use of a business intelligence system for performance management. SAS® Strategic Performance Management, the only packaged solution in use among the finalists, enables the hospital to enhance the quality of patient care by tracking a total of 60 business and clinical KPIs (key performance indicators) pulled from disparate areas, ranging from research and education to finance and human resources. With SAS, MMC Center has achieved solid improvements in its ability to evaluate and initiate preventive measures. Among the results are reductions in nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections and patient falls. “Business intelligence initiatives are at the center of converting information technology to information management and competitive advantage,” said Ron Milton, Executive Vice President, Computerworld. “The organizations and professionals judged to be finalists in Computerworld’s 2007 ‘Best Practices in Business Intelligence’ awards program have unlocked the true value of business intelligence and applying analytics to their advantage.” About ComputerworldComputerworld is the leading source of technology news and information for IT influencers worldwide.
