Institute for Defense and Business, SAS honor Executive FellowsProgram fosters defense, private sector collaborationCARY, NC (Oct. 10, 2007) – The Executive Fellows Program of the Institute for Defense and Business (IDB), which creates opportunities for recently retired uniformed and civilian military leaders to share insights on emerging military and business trends, recognized its 2007-2008 class last week. For the third year, business intelligence leader SAS sponsored the program. The third annual IDB Executive Fellows dinner was hosted in Washington, DC, by former North Carolina Gov. James G. Martin, Chairman of the IDB board of directors; Sen. Elizabeth Dole; and Thomas J. Donohue, President and CEO of the US Chamber of Commerce. “The IDB produces real results and real change in the global environment,” said Tom Mazich, Vice President of SAS US Government Operations. “We support the Executive Fellows Program for its substantial contributions in logistics leadership.” The 2007-2008 Executive Fellows (all retired) are: Gen. William L. Nyland, former Assistant Commandant, US Marine Corps; Vice Adm. Justin D. McCarthy, former Director Material Readiness and Logistics for the Chief of Naval Operations, US Navy; Lt. Gen. Carl A. Strock, former Commander and Chief of Engineers, Corps of Engineers, US Army; and Ronald L. Orr, Senior Executive Service, former Principal Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Logistics, US Air Force. IDB chooses fellows for outstanding service records and demonstrated interest in sharing experience and expertise with future leaders. IDB annually chooses at least four Executive Fellows from the military branches, Department of Defense (DOD) and joint commands. “Extensive experience, outstanding achievement and stature in the military community make IDB Executive Fellows ideal mentors,” noted Mark C. Cramer, IDB President. “The fellows program enables them to continue contributing through IDB programs and activities.” IDB Executive Fellows participate in IDB educational offerings, including Center of Excellence in Logistics and Technology (LOGTECH) programs, speaking on emerging issues and trends in a range of military and management issues. Fellows write articles, often in partnership with university faculty, and conduct research in areas of critical interest to the DOD and private sector. The IDB is a nonprofit research and education institute formed in 1997 by the University of North Carolina and the state of North Carolina. In addition to the Executive Fellows Program, the IDB manages LOGTECH, which was developed in partnership with the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill and the US Army’s Depot and Arsenal Executive Leadership Program to offer business education to leaders of our nation’s military-industrial base from all the services and the DOD. The newest major initiative of the IDB is its Center for Stabilization and Economic Reconstruction, through which the IDB provides education programs and delivers specialized support to the DOD in this increasingly important arena.
