Wellman Family Foundation makes significant gift to education

CHARLESTON, W.Va.  (Aug. 04, 2004)  –  School teachers and their students across West Virginia will have access to SAS inSchool’s award-winning, Web-based educational curriculum through the 2006-07 school year, thanks to a grant made by the Wellman Family Foundation.

Selby Wellman, founder of the Wellman Family Foundation, announced the grant Wednesday at the West Virginia Statewide Technology Conference in Charleston. Governor Bob Wise, State Schools Superintendent David Stewart, Executive Director for the Office of Instructional Technology Brenda Williams and SAS CEO Dr. Jim Goodnight joined Wellman in making the announcement.

The Wellman Family Foundation grant will make SAS inSchool resources available to all secondary schools in the state as well as to Marshall University. Public, private and parochial schools are all included in the statewide partnership. SAS inSchool creates Web-based teaching and learning curricula focusing on the core subjects taught in grades eight through 12, including English, Spanish, social studies, science and mathematics.

“This gift is the result of several determined and dedicated individuals coming together to take this unprecedented step to improve the educational opportunities for young people statewide,” said Goodnight.

SAS inSchool’s standards-based resources are receiving growing acceptance across the country by middle schools, high schools, virtual schools, as well as community colleges and universities. The award-winning software offers a Web-based planning environment for teachers; for students, it promotes problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

“The students are the true beneficiaries of this wonderful gift,” said Stewart. “Thanks go to Mr. Wellman for his generosity and his dedication to providing educational opportunities to all West Virginia children.”

The Wellman Family Foundation is dedicated to creating educational opportunities to West Virginia students, which includes many scholarships to Marshall University.
