Sinclair Community College honored for innovative use of SAS® software

Student retention and recruitment efforts earn Data Warehousing Institute Best Practices Award

CARY, NC  (July 21, 2008)  –  In 2007, Sinclair Community College enjoyed its first fall term enrollment increase in four years. Using software from SAS, the leader in business intelligence and analytics, the college enhanced its enrollment management strategy – and earned a Best Practices Award from the Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI).

One of the top-12 two-year institutions in North America, Sinclair chose SAS to analyze data gathered by the college’s enterprise resource planning system from more than 75 departments. Sinclair mined 10 years’ worth of student data, including more than 200 specific student attributes, and divided students into population clusters. More than 100 reports are now available to hundreds of users tapping daily into the system.  Faculty, department chairs and administrators can view reports, derive intelligence and act based on the information.

To support its enrollment management strategy, Sinclair merged institutional planning and analytics and reporting teams into a Business Intelligence Competency Center, a single source of decision-support information.

“Before SAS, our internal research group had to rely on IT to write custom applications to extract data,’’ said Karl Konsdorf, Analytics and Reporting Manager for Sinclair. “With other vendors, we couldn’t scale it out or deploy to the entire enterprise. Other products just helped us look at what happened – not what is going to happen.”

Adds Dr. Ken Moore, Sinclair Senior Vice President, “I don’t think there is any end to what you can achieve with SAS.”

The Best Practices Award program identifies and honors organizations that demonstrate excellence in developing, deploying, and maintaining business intelligence and data warehousing applications. A panel of expert independent judges evaluated all submissions on four criteria: business impact, maturity, innovation and relevance.

"As business intelligence continues to evolve, it becomes more and more imperative that BI/DW practitioners share best practices and lessons learned with the industry. By recognizing and honoring these innovative implementations through the Best Practices Awards program, we hope to provide a platform that fosters information sharing and ultimately the advancement of the business intelligence industry,” said Richard Zbylut, General Manager of TDWI.

Awards winners will be honored at the TDWI World Conference in San Diego in August.
