SAS and Export Development Canada win 2005 TDWI Best Practices Award

Export Development Canada excels with data warehouse powered by SAS®

LISBON, PORTUGAL   (June 22, 2005)  –  SAS, the leader in business intelligence, today announced that Export Development Canada (EDC) has won The Data Warehousing Institute’s (TDWI) prestigious 2005 Best Practices Award in the Enterprise Data Warehousing category. EDC is Canada’s only financial institution devoted exclusively to supporting Canadian exporters and investors, and is guided by a federal mandate to support and develop the country’s trade and international business opportunities.

“Winning this award with EDC validates the powerful capabilities SAS® technology can bring to an enterprise,” said Dr. Jim Goodnight, CEO and founder of SAS. “By using SAS, EDC was able to make its data work for them, turning it into valuable information that could easily be accessed at the right time by its users – from any employee to its board of directors. It’s an honor to have won this award with such a leading-edge organization.”

With so much data available, EDC needed a data warehouse that would become the trusted source of enterprise-wide information – giving users a single version of the truth every time they accessed it. EDC chose SAS data warehousing and business intelligence technologies to accomplish this. “Managing business in an increasingly complex and evolving world demands better management of and quick access to corporate information,” said Arthur Pelletier, director of client services at EDC. “With SAS, we’ve replaced many disconnected sources of data – application extracts, personal spreadsheets, Microsoft Access databases – with an integrated structure from SAS that supports reliable and robust tools, processes and procedures.”

With EDC already realizing a full return on its investment from the time savings and data quality improvements in the monthly risk management report – its first business use for the new data warehouse – future initiatives look similarly promising. “The SAS data warehouse will be our main vehicle for disseminating corporate information,” said James Dorrance, data warehouse project manager for EDC. More information about EDC is available at www.edc.ca.

Nominations were judged by a panel of experts, with the winners clearly demonstrating excellence in developing, deploying and maintaining business intelligence (BI) and data warehousing (DW) applications. Judges evaluated all submissions on four criteria: business impact, maturity, innovation and relevance. Further information about TDWI is available at www.dw-institute.org/.

Peter Quinn, general manager of TDWI, commented, “We are very pleased with the quality and sophistication of the entries we received. It is very exciting to hear such a variety of BI success stories.”
