SAS tops list of North Carolina’s best employersCARY, N.C. (Apr. 28, 2005) – SAS, the leader in business intelligence, has been ranked No. 1 in the first “Best Employers in North Carolina” competition. Compiled by the Best Companies Group, the competition is an initiative to motivate companies in North Carolina to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence. The full list of 10 can be found in a special supplement to the May issue of Business North Carolina. Cary, N.C.-based SAS has achieved similar success on a national level. SAS ranked No. 16 on the 2005 list of FORTUNE’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in America. The company has been among the top 20 companies on that list – including six times among the top 10 – all eight years it has been published. This consistent performance earned SAS induction into the newly introduced “Hall of Fame,” a compilation honoring the 22 companies that have appeared on every list since its inception in 1998. SAS is a North Carolina success story. Growing out of work done at N.C. State University, SAS was founded in 1976 and was a pioneer in many employee-friendly practices, which became an integral part of the company’s business model. SAS’ vice president of human resources, Jeff Chambers, attributes the company’s record of excellence to a model that emphasizes long-term relationships with employees and customers. “We have always had a commitment to investing in and cultivating meaningful, long-term relationships with our employees and clients,” said Chambers. “This has led to unusually low turnover in both populations and is at the core of our 28 years of sustained profitability and success.” Furthermore, SAS is held up as an example of a company that understands the value of people. In a January press release, Ralph Campbell, former N.C. state auditor, said, “A shining example of outstanding management practices is SAS Institute. SAS provides its employees with on-site day care, fitness facilities and other benefits, not from some warm and fuzzy notions of being kind to people, but for sound business reasons. Dr. Jim Goodnight and his management realize that the biggest asset they have is the human capital that comes through their doors every day.” Other honorees on the “Best Employers in North Carolina” list include: Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., Microsoft Corp, Clarkston Consulting, SpectraSite Communications Inc., Inspire Pharmaceuticals Inc., Targacept Inc., Gilead Sciences Inc., Novozymes North America Inc., and the Biltmore Co. The competition was sponsored by the North Carolina Society for Human Resources Management; Red Hand Media LLC, publisher of Business North Carolina magazine; and Findley-Davis Inc., an independent, fee-for-service human resources consulting, actuarial and administrative services firm. The selection process, conducted by Pennsylvania-based Best Companies Group, included an assessment of each company’s employee policies and procedures as well as the results of an internal employee survey.
