Tekelec signals for SAS® Enterprise BI Server to improve operational efficiencies

Comprehensive BI platform moves intelligence to end-users quickly and easily

PHILADELPHIA   (April 11, 2005)  – Tekelec, a leading developer of telecommunications products for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, has selected the SAS® Enterprise BI Server to provide strategic reporting capabilities to executives, analysts and users throughout the company as it continues its rapid industry growth. Tekelec chose SAS’ comprehensive business intelligence platform and analytics-powered, real-time BI to leverage its existing experience with SAS, thereby reducing start-up costs. SAS, the world’s largest privately held software company, is the leader in business intelligence.

Tekelec, an industry leader building smart carrier networks through its sophisticated signaling, switching and application solutions for telecom service providers, required a method for moving data exploration and analysis to end-users throughout the enterprise via the Web. The SAS Enterprise BI Server will allow analysts, executives and others in the company to easily access, explore and analyze data.

"Now that we have expanded our use of SAS and added the SAS Enterprise BI Server platform, Tekelec is capable of making the logical progression from making decisions based largely on intuition to being a fact-based, decision-making organization,” said Angela Hall, senior quality engineer at Tekelec. “We are experiencing an impressive return on investment, and we project that the business intelligence enhancements under way will generate millions of dollars in operational savings.

“We’re also saving time and resources with SAS,” Hall said. “I used to spend a majority of my time responding to ad hoc requests, and now, I’m able to focus on using my technical expertise on strategic improvement opportunities. Tekelec engineers no longer will be required to spend significant chunks of their time digging for data to generate measurement reports. They all will have easy, quick and consistent access to BI through familiar and intuitive interfaces, including zero-footprint, Web-based interfaces and integration with Microsoft Office environments.”

SAS Enterprise BI Server, a major component of the SAS®9 Intelligence Platform, has been greatly enhanced to create an integrated enterprise architecture that empowers users at all skill levels and geographic locations with targeted interfaces to support their individual needs and skills. SAS Enterprise BI Server provides a suite of enterprisewide ad hoc query and reporting capabilities, applying the power of SAS analytics and data management to create an easy-to-use platform that’s unique to the BI marketplace.

Hall recommended the SAS Enterprise BI Server platform after an evaluation of BI tools and platforms available at Tekelec. Hall said SAS stood out because its BI platform could accommodate more frequent data updates based on end-user requirements (not just on a daily or weekly basis), the ability to immediately expand on five years of investment in SAS processing and because of SAS’ commitment to customer service resources.

SAS has provided Tekelec with a fully integrated and comprehensive suite of BI software on one single platform. Tekelec analysts can now use this BI platform to run self-service, Web-based reports quickly and easily; perform visualization as well as query and analysis; leverage SAS capabilities in data access, reporting and predictive analytics directly from Microsoft Office environments such as Excel; and analyze summary data organized along business dimensions with integrated OLAP storage. These new BI tools will allow Tekelec to easily access, explore and analyze data via the Web or Microsoft Office environments.

“We’re excited to partner with an innovative, growing telecom company like Tekelec, accelerating its success in developing smarter, next-generation telecom signaling and switching solutions for the network carriers the company helps,” said Rob Stephens, director of technology strategies at SAS. “SAS provides a truly comprehensive BI environment, including advanced analytics, reporting and OLAP technology, to all types of users and skill levels that meet the BI needs of everyone in the organization.”

The announcement came at the 30th annual SAS Users Group International (SUGI) conference. More than 3,000 SAS users from around the world attended this year’s SUGI in Philadelphia.
