SAS Honored With Pro Patria AwardState-level award is highest honor given to a civilian employer by the U.S. Department of DefenseCARY, NC (Apr. 06, 2007) – The North Carolina Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) committee presented SAS, the leader in business intelligence, with the highest state-level award given to a civilian employer by the US Department of Defense, the Pro Patria Award. Each year, one employer is honored at the state level for its support of employees who are members of the National Guard or military Reserves. Recipients of the award demonstrate exceptional support for US national defense by adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to serve as Guard members and reservists. "It is an honor for SAS to receive the prestigious award," said Mike Gallagher, Director of Human Resources Shared Services at SAS. "The greater honor, however, is to employ brave men and women who serve in our United States armed services. We know that without their dedication to our country, life as we know it would be much different. This dedication and their sacrifices afford us all the freedom and liberty we hold so dear." In 2004, SAS revised its military service policy, increasing the length of compensation for military leave from 12 months to 18 months. SAS also extended coverage on the benefit plan from 60 days to 12 months. "Given the small percent of employees working for SAS that are in the Guard or Reserve, these policy changes didn’t necessarily have to be made," said Randy Neal, a SAS employee in Austin, Texas. Neal served in Iraq for 18 months as Lieutenant Colonel in the National Guard. "We have had nothing but great support from SAS." Gallagher accepted the award on behalf of SAS at the North Carolina Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Annual Employer Recognition Banquet held Jan. 27 in Greensboro, NC. SAS employees Bob Walsh, Jonathan Smith and Chris Lester, all active members of the military, took the stage to represent SAS as well. About ESGRThe ESGR is an agency within the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. The committee was established by Presidential Executive Order in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve component members and their civilian employers and to assist in resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment. Today, ESGR operates through a network of more than 4,200 volunteers in 54 committees located in each state, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Europe. The North Carolina ESGR Committee is tasked to promote understanding of the National Guard and Reserve with both public and private sector employers.
