SAS’ Helton named to HITSP boardHealthcare Information Technology Standards Panel elects new board members for 2008-2009 termCARY, NC (Jan. 08, 2008) – Edward Helton, PhD, has been elected to serve as an open representative on the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP). Chief Scientist for Regulatory and Biomedical Affairs, Health and Life Sciences Global Practice at SAS, the leader in business intelligence, Helton is a noted thought leader and an active participant in healthcare regulatory affairs. In his current position at SAS he is responsible for guiding the development of SAS® software for use in the pharmaceutical industry. Among his areas of expertise are clinical implementation and application of the biomedical framework within the medical products industry and its regulatory authorities. Additionally, Helton trains staff in drug development and research, is the chair of the board of directors for the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC), is the co-chair for Health Level 7 (HL7) and HL7 ex-officio board of directors member for the Regulated Clinical Research Information Management (RCRIM) Technical Committee, participates on the SAS Drug Development (SDD) Customer Advisory Board, and monitors new directions in the life sciences industry. Prior to his present role, he was Vice President of Regulatory and Biomedical Affairs at iBiomatics (a former business unit of SAS) and served as Chief Clinical Scientist for the SAS PharmaHealth Technologies Division. Nominations for the open representative organization seats on the HITSP board were held Nov. 2-16, 2007, and were circulated to the representative organizations for balloting. Others named as standards developing organizations (SDO) representatives include: Donald Bechtel, Dr. Bill Braithwaite, Lynne Gilbertson and Dr. Brett Trusko. James (Jamie) Ferguson was elected as a non-SDO provider representative; Stephen Lieber was elected as a non-SDO IT representative; and Charles Parisot was elected as a non-SDO vendor representative. About HITSPThe Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel, which is sponsored by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in cooperation with strategic partners Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) and Booz Allen Hamilton, states its mission is “to serve as a cooperative partnership between the public and private sectors for the purpose of achieving a widely accepted and useful set of standards specifically to enable and support widespread interoperability among healthcare software applications, as they will interact in a local, regional and national health information network for the United States.”
