SAS Academic Program University Newsletter - Second Issue 2005

Dear Reader,

The scope of education is changing dramatically. Faculty need to adapt their curricula to the ever changing global, corporate landscape, and students seek to familiarize themselves with information technologies. Companies can no longer rely on "growing insight" alone. They need to have the proper skills to make sense of all the data created, and be able to tell relevant from non-relevant data, and interpret events and data timely and efficiently in the right way.
Thus, companies are increasingly seeking graduates with business intelligence and analytics skills. As the market leader in business intelligence and analytics, SAS seeks to address the demand for graduates with SAS business intelligence and analytics skills through its Academic Program. Over 2 000 universities worldwide are now teaching SAS to students because they know SAS is being used at more than 40 000 sites - including 96 of the top 100 companies on the FORTUNE 500, and SAS skills will give their students a hot competitive advantage.
In this issue, we take a closer look at the SAS Academic Program - highlighting program benefits for students, professors and researchers, and examining the various ways in which SAS is working closely with faculty, students, researchers and other education leaders on innovative collaborations and delivering comprehensive curricula.
We hope you enjoy the read, and welcome any questions or feedback.

Best Wishes,
Your Academic Program Team

SAS ACADEMIC PROGRAM - SOFTWARE AND MUCH MORE

For nearly 3 decades, SAS has remained true to its academic heritage by working closely with universities and business schools around the world; holding seminars and courses, providing curricula and research support, developing e-learning and certification, sponsoring events, arranging internships for students and more.
Between 1999-2005, large companies have on average increased their business intelligence staff three-fold. Yet, the demand continues to outweigh the supply by 2-to-1. As the world leader in business intelligence and analytics SAS seeks to address this demand through our Academic Program; a program that works with over 2 000 partner universities worldwide to bridge the gap between academia and business .

Welcome to Hypercompetition-Competitive Advantage at its Fastest
Knowledge@Emory
The brave, new business world of hypercompetition has dawned, where the competitive advantages a company enjoys today may vanish with breathtaking speed and frequency.
In a paper titled The Rise of Hypercompetition in the U.S. Manufacturing Sector, 1950-2002, researchers L.G.Thomas and Richard D'Aveni say the phenomenon of hypercompetition is rapidly spreading across the U.S. and the globe. Thomas presented their nuanced findings at the recent Atlanta Competitive Advantage Conference at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. This academic research conference featured panel discussions and presentations of 42 research studies conducted by professors from 34 different business schools and universities, including Stanford, Columbia, INSEAD, Dartmouth, and New York University. These studies focus on how resources (physical, social, or intellectual), investment in capabilities, inter-firm collaboration, organization structure, flexibility, geography, market visibility, and reputation can help a company in establishing competitive advantage.
