SAS Forum International 2004: Academic Intelligence Award

Each year, SAS recognizes a business school or university for outstanding achievements in the way it prepares its graduates for the business world. Founded in 1906, the Warsaw School of Economics (WSE) is currently the leading university of economics in Poland and amongst the best management schools in Europe. With Poland’s recent accession to the European Union the need to educate future Polish business leaders has become all the more important, and SAS acknowledges the variety of ways in which WSE combines teaching and modern research using SAS with its role as a pioneer of modern economic and social thinking.

On 15 June 2004, SAS awarded the Warsaw School of Economics with the Academic Intelligence Award for their innovative and successful integration of SAS into numerous courses institution-wide. Upon receiving this award Professor Dr. Ewa Fratczak, Head of the PhD Program Collegium of Economic Analyses at WSE said, “Thank you for this very precious award from SAS Institute. Warsaw School of Economics is the biggest economic university in Poland with over 100 years of history. I believe that the next 100 years will be our 100 year history with SAS.”

A live recording of the award ceremony in which Dr. Jim Goodnight, founder and CEO of SAS, presents WSE with the Academic Intelligence Award 2004, can be viewed here

SAS in Curriculum: Data Mining at the University of Pavia

The University of Pavia is one of the oldest Universities in Europe founded in 1361. It currently has about 35,000 students, distributed almost evenly among its nine faculties. Located 30 km south of Milan, Pavia is a University town, and its student environment has contributed to attain high levels of excellence in both teaching and research. The University of Pavia has been recognized by the Italian research ministry as an excellence teaching centre; accordingly, it has developed a number of International Master and PhD programmes, open to students of all nationalities.

The data mining laboratory which utilizes SAS® software is actively involved in the scientific community, in the development of scientific research, both at the applied and at the methodological level. The methodological research is finalised at the development of computational and/or statistical tools useful for real applications; the applied research is aimed directly at the resolution of practical problems, yet with a coherent and rigorous scientific approach. A description of the research of the lab can be found on the personal home pages of the members. A good description of the research vision of the laboratory can be found in the book by Paolo Giudici: Applied data mining, Wiley, 2003.

SAS in Curriculum: MBA courses at Canada's Dalhousie University

Over the past six years, the School of Business at Dalhousie University has become renowned for its talent pool in the business intelligence field.  From the establishment of the Marketing Informatics concentration for both graduate and undergraduate students, the school has seen a keen interest in the courses offered within this area. Some newly developed MBA courses, such as Knowledge Discovery in Databases, have benefited from the introduction of SAS Enterprise Miner, SAS’award-winning data mining tool, in the syllabus. Students develop not only technical skills by building models, for example, but also business skills that make them a hot commodity on the Canadian labor market.

The centerpiece of these courses is a large, hands-on, data mining project that uses real data. The extensive exposure students have to real business problems – going through the knowledge discovery process, from the identification of a business problem (or opportunity) to the creation of a marketing strategy based on the data mining results – is extremely valuable. Even though most companies are doing very little hiring, and some are even eliminating jobs, businesses are increasing their investment in business intelligence tools and personnel qualified to exploit them. Dalhousie students have proven that the knowledge and skills they gain through these courses and their hands-on experience with SAS Enterprise Miner are invaluable assets. Graduates of the MI program are in high demand, as companies recognize the program and the talent it produces.

Alex Filimon, the KDD instructor at Dalhousie, has also started offering a Customer Relationship Management course at Acadia University that uses SAS Enterprise Miner. Acadia is the first primarily undergraduate university in Canada to offer this course to its students. This newly developed partnership is a big step forward in improving Acadia's Advantage program, which provides students with laptops and gives them access to various business software packages.

"The unique aspect of this program is that students gain an understanding of both IT and business," Filimon explains. "The feedback we get from employers is really, really good. Dalhousie graduates can be easily shifted around to meet varying needs: Whether it's technical or business expertise, that's OK because that person can do both."

BIO: Alex Filimon is currently conducting research on knowledge discovery in medical databases. He is a partner with The Novus Consulting Group in Halifax and a lecturer with Dalhousie and Acadia universities. You can contact him at 902-489-2665 or afilimon@novusconsulting.com.

Announcement: New Data Mining Program at the University of Denver

The role of the Statistics and Operations Technology Department at the University of Denver has traditionally been one of providing coverage for required statistics courses for business majors. With typically no more than a handful of students graduating each year with a major in statistics, the electives offerings had been few. "During the past three years the we have seen the number of majors grow so that we now graduate 20-25 per year. With this increase in numbers of students we have expanded the course offerings with an eye towards software and applications," says Professor Robert Hannum, of the University of Denver.

Professor Robert Hannum continues, "We decided to bring SAS to our students, as we felt this was the premier software tool to keep them competitive in the job market. With the use of SAS we began to expand the breadth of subject coverage in electives and offered courses in modeling and data mining. These classes were so popular with both the students and prospective employers that after some research into the current availability of data mining programs (there are very few) we decided to make a proposal to the administration for a Masters of Science in Data Mining."

The proposed MSc program has just recently been approved and is set to begin with the department’s first Masters program ever starting this fall. The requirements include coursework in the areas of data mining and statistical modeling (taught in the Statistics department) along with other required courses in data warehousing (Information Technology department) and database marketing (Marketing department). The program will be applied in nature, emphasizing data mining techniques and featuring the use of SAS Enterprise Miner. Students completing the Masters program will also receive a SAS industry certificate in data mining.

To find out more about the program, contact Professor Robert Hannum.

Announcement: Learn Data Mining online at the University of Louisville

Dr. Patricia Cerrito, a professor of mathematics at the University of Louisville , will be teaching two online courses at Kentucky Virtual University. The first course “Linear Models and Data Mining” will deal with the data mining process, and how linear models can be used to generate hypotheses. It will run from mid-August through mid-December, 2004. The second course will focus more generally on SAS Enterprise Miner and data mining. It will run from mid-January through mid-May, 2005. In both courses SAS data mining software will be used extensively. Data visualization will be emphasized throughout. In both courses, students can use instructor-provided data, or substitute their own databases. The primary emphasis will be to interpret the results. Papers rather than tests will be the method of evaluation, and writing skills will be enhanced during the course.

Although SAS software was developed for the natural sciences, it is now also used by businesses to turn raw business data into actionable knowledge. Thus the ability to use SAS has now become a very marketable skill. You can learn or enhance your SAS skills affordably, in your own time, and from anywhere in the world by signing up for one of these courses at Kentucky Virtual University.

Both courses carry 3 graduate credits from the University of Louisville, and the university welcomes international students to enroll too because they can be just as much involved in this virtual learning experience as the next student studying from home in Kentucky!

If you are interested in finding out more about these online data mining courses, please contact Dr. Patricia Cerrito  who will be happy to answer your questions.
