The Universidad de los Andes School of Management introduces graduate students to the power of SAS®The Universidad de los Andes (UniAndes) is a private, nonprofit, non-confessional and non-political institution. Since its foundation in 1948 in Bogotá, Colombia, the UniAndes has been committed to educating the country's best and brightest minds. It has played an active role in the production of thought, science and progress. UASM educates students in a country that, while often tumultuous, is also undergoing tremendous modernization and growth. In the past decade, the country's businesses and government have begun collecting vast quantities of information on databases. "But nobody's analyzing it deeply," says Alfonso Pedraza, professor of operations and technology.Working with SAS, Pedraza is introducing Colombia's future government and business leaders to the science of data mining. Los Andes offers a course that teaches students how to use SAS Enterprise Miner software. "SAS has a very strong platform that is known worldwide. We're bringing added value to our students by introducing them to SAS," explains Pedraza. Our school is where the future managers and administrators are being prepared. And we want to prepare people to make decisions based on information," Pedraza says. Learning SAS, he adds, gives his students a competitive advantage. While few companies in Colombia use data mining, the number is growing and sometimes analysts in businesses that employ that advanced technology report directly to the company president. Learning SAS puts Los Andes graduates in a position to take very high-profile jobs. "Our graduates will have a very strong advantage," Pedraza says. "Knowledge of SAS will open doors for them." Harvard Business School Press, SAS, and Intel sponsor discussion of AnalyticsNearly 100 C-level executives from across the United States gathered in New York for a symposium on analytics, presented by the Harvard Business School Press, SAS and Intel. The theme was "Competing on Analytics," and industry thought leader Tom Davenport, a professor of IT and management at Babson College, presented findings from a study he recently conducted on decision-making processes. Davenport surveyed companies that use analytics for competitive business advantage; his research, released last year (register for free report), concluded that leading organizations are focusing an increasing amount of attention on developing fact-based decision-making processes. The study also revealed that senior-level buy-in and involvement are critical to the success of enterprise business intelligence. Information Revolution
The information revolution. If you thought it had already happened, think again. A new book, Information Revolution: Using the Information Evolution Model to Grow Your Business (John Wiley & Sons; December 2005; $29.95), enables any organization, no matter how underdeveloped or convoluted its current information architecture, to become an information-driven "intelligent entity." It was written by three expert authors from SAS, Gloria J. Miller, Jim Davis and Allan Russell. Continuous innovation is necessary for business survival, and this text provides a practical road map for growth and evolution through the Information Evolution Model (IEM) -- a simple but powerful framework for evaluating, configuring and maximizing the information management infrastructure of any organization. Enlightening case studies demonstrating how real companies have used IEM to slash costs, boost productivity, and stay well ahead of the innovation curve complete the book that executives like Bob Schwartz, vice president and CIO for Panasonic Corp., are calling a "must-read."Read More
