SAS' first scientific research application, SAS/Genetics, improves the quality and efficiency of genetic marker analysis. Its procedures (Proc Allele, Proc Haplotype, Proc Case Control, Proc Family, Proc PSmooth) include both novel and referenced analytic methods for statistical genetics. In SAS 9.1, new capabilities for analyses and data formats have been added to all five procedures, plus two additional procedures have been added: Proc Inbreed from SAS/Stat for pedigree data and Proc HTSNP, an experimental procedure, for analyzing haplotype diversity using haplotype data subsets (haplotype tag SNPs). SAS/Genetics' dedicated focus minimizes data manipulations and streamlines marker analysis.

With SAS/Genetics, analysts can:

• Study and obtain summary statistics on genetic markers more easily.
• Examine the relationship between two or more markers by combining genotype data with well-recognized methods.
• Find associations between markers and traits such as disease using case-control or family data more quickly. The flexibility and scalability of the application means any number of alleles can be utilized.
• Correct any inconsistencies caused by multiple testing effects on results, thus improving the quality of results.
• Interpret results more efficiently since disequilibrium and association data are displayed simultaneously in an easy-to-read format.
