Spring Newsletter
News and Items of Interest

Dear Educator,

"Spring, the sweet spring, is the year's pleasant king, / then blooms each thing" said the poet Thomas Nashe more than 400 years ago. "Spring, she have... springed!" said my wildly effusive cab driver earlier today while pointing at a dogwood tree we very nearly hit.

Who hasn't felt the impulse to celebrate this season of rebirth and renewal? And just as we spring clean our houses in order to refresh our spirits, so too can we use this season to enliven our classrooms.

I am not talking about cleaning the chalkboard or getting rid of old documents, but about looking at how SAS® Curriculum Pathways® can help breathe new life into your lessons. Whatever your discipline, why not use this time to explore our 1,200 online lessons and interactive tools? I’m confident that doing so will prove rejuvenating.

If you have not logged in to SAS Curriculum Pathways recently, now is the time to do so. Not only can our resources help you finish the current school year on a high note, but you can begin to see us as your online partner as you plan for the year to come. We encourage you to spread the word to colleagues, reminding them that SAS provides this $72 million product at no cost.

On behalf of the entire SAS Curriculum Pathways team, I hope that you benefit from the information in this newsletter and that you make the most of our award-winning digital content.

Tech & Learning Magazine Award of Excellence

SAS Curriculum Pathways has earned an Award of Excellence from Tech & Learning magazine. Tech & Learning's prestigious 27-year-old recognition program honors software, hardware, network, Web products and innovative applications that break new ground, as well as those that add significant enhancements to proven education tools. A panel of more than 30 educators, which tested more than 100 entries across the country, chose the winners. "Our judges put dozens of entries through their paces. To come out with their seal of approval is a testament to the product," said Kevin Hogan, Editorial Director for NewBay Media's Tech & Learning Group.

Teachers Talk About Us

Here's what teachers are saying about our online professional development courses. "I really enjoyed this focused look at the SAS materials and the opportunity to explore them more thoroughly than I have in the past," says Donna Morgan, a specialist in advanced content differentiation. "I think my instructional choices will be better informed and my instructional resources will be better supported and organized in the future." Science teacher Kathy Allen concurs: "Prior to the course, I was frustrated with some of my attempts to integrate SAS resources into instruction. Through the course, I was encouraged to tweak and customize lessons to meet student needs. I became familiar enough with SAS Curriculum Pathways to figure out how I could adapt lessons to use successfully with my students."

Getting the Most from SAS® Curriculum Pathways®

Technology alone cannot enhance learning, but it does provide unique (and potentially more effective) opportunities for delivering appropriate content based on sound instructional design. As we hope you've come to recognize, SAS Curriculum Pathways supports effective teaching and enhances student engagement and understanding. Though SAS provides these award-winning materials at no cost to US teachers and students, we know that you're invested in us. You've taken the time to explore our lessons, learning activities, tools and simulations. To maximize that investment, we encourage you to take advantage of these training and professional-development options. We offer:

  • Open Houses: During these hour-long sessions, we provide guided demonstrations of the no-cost resources available in SAS Curriculum Pathways.
  • Spotlight Series: These on-demand sessions provide in-depth examination of content, features and instructional strategies.
  • Online Professional Development: Online courses offer long-term opportunities for teachers to use our resources while garnering support from SAS facilitators and peer educators. The pilot for our newest offering, Transforming Instruction with SAS Curriculum Pathways, winds up in May. Due to its success, we will offer the course again during the 2010-2011 school year, at no cost. Watch for details on our website.
  • On-Site Professional Development: Experienced SAS trainers provide teachers with hands-on instruction as they learn about product resources and integrate them into existing curricula. Our summer training calendar fills quickly. If your school/district wants to include SAS in upcoming staff development, please contact our coordinator, Deborah Gray.
