Greetings to SAS® Curriculum Pathways® Users

As you start the new year, I hope you’ll take a few minutes each day to explore the resources in SAS Curriculum Pathways. Every time I do, I find a new lesson, topic or resource – along with new ways to engage students and help them become excited about learning.

Speaking of excitement, we’re beginning 2009 with a major announcement: SAS® Curriculum Pathways® is now available to all US educators at no cost. Help us spread this good news, especially to schools that have yet to establish an account with us.

We’ll continue to provide professional development options that help meet your needs. And we’ll continue to develop the new and innovative content you’ve come to expect.

I’m also pleased to report that during this past fall we averaged more than 22,000 logins per week – the highest numbers in our history. Thanks for helping us reach this milestone.

Again, thanks for choosing SAS Curriculum Pathways. If you haven’t taken a look at our product lately, 2009 is a great time to begin!

Sincerely,

Bruce Friend
Director, SAS Curriculum Pathways

Black History Month and Your Classroom
This February, get students talking about Black History Month with thought-provoking materials in both social studies and English.

  • In social studies, The Struggle for Civil Rights includes lessons that examine key Supreme Court decisions and an InterActivity in which students examine primary-source documents and answer the question, “Should African Americans follow Booker T. Washington's advice for achieving equality?”
  • In English, we’ve recently added an audio inquiry on The Harlem Renaissance to complement our materials on African American Literature.

Research Links SAS® Curriculum Pathways® and Student Achievement
Recent research suggests our product can enhance student achievement compared to traditional modes of instruction. Although the study was limited in scope, the results are encouraging and have prompted more detailed research. The work was done by Richard Lamb as part of his MS thesis, “Review of the Efficacy of SAS Curriculum Pathways on Student Understanding in Chemistry.”

Lamb’s findings indicate that the product “increases student understanding of chemistry concepts when compared to traditional instruction.” Each of three product components showed statistically significant student gains. Indeed, students using SAS Curriculum Pathways outperformed the control group by as much as 18.5 percent on a test of pre- and post-test understanding of chemistry concepts.
