Recognizing that the academic community is training the next generation of SAS users, and supporting administrative excellence, SAS has announced plans to support education initiatives through SAS educational grants.
"Technology alone will not move our educational system forward," said Jim Goodnight, SAS president and CEO. "The creativity and innovation of people using technology are what drive dramatic change. We’re confident that this grants program will not only build on SAS’ history of working collaboratively with educational institutions but also create opportunities to help colleges and universities use software technology in new and better ways."
SAS seeks proposals from accredited educational organizations for innovative projects focusing on select educational initiatives. The grants program will accept proposals for projects that use SAS technology for teaching, research and the administration of the organization.
SAS tailors each grant to the participant’s needs and strengths. This means that participants have access to a wide range of SAS resources including software, consulting services, publications and training. For example, a grant might include software, certification resources, training for faculty and classroom curriculum. Another grant might include a SAS solution, services to implement that solution and knowledge transfer for the participant’s team to develop and maintain that solution.
This year’s educational initiatives include the following:
| Teaching/Research |

| Data and text mining |
Strategic performance management |

Case studies and proven successes
A number of institutions have successfully worked with SAS for teaching, research and administrative purposes:
Participant collaboration opportunities
As part of the program, the participant’s organization serves as a reference for SAS. There are many innovative ways to ways to serve as a reference and, in doing so, provide testimony and thought leadership for others in the academic community about the successful use of SAS technology in education.
Based on feedback received from previous program participants, SAS has developed a variety of collaborative opportunities in which you can participate. There are numerous types of activities that can be customized to meet the specific goals and needs of organizations. Below are just a few examples of activities other institutions have participated in and have recommended as beneficial opportunities for others. SAS can work with you to develop a list of collaborative activities tailored to your objectives.
Onsite activities
- SAS showcase reference site: As a showcase site, you have the opportunity to present the sum total of your development, implementation and outcomes based on your use of SAS technology, services, training, publications and support.
- Open house: For an open house, the participant hosts a symposium in which you demonstrate and discuss applications based on an agenda you have created with SAS.
- Community "pro-bono" project: When you develop and implement a pro-bono community project using SAS software, you serve your community (i.e., secondary schools, public service entities, social programs, etc.) and help fulfill your institution’s mission of public service.
Presentations and conferences
- SAS inSchool: SAS inSchool involves educators in every step of its software and program development. As an educator, present your experiences using SAS inSchool’s Curriculum Pathways® at state, regional and/or national conferences.
- SAS Diplomat: SAS has created a SAS Diplomat Certificate to support academicians who give presentations, speeches and/or lectures about their experiences with SAS technology. Such SAS Diplomats who speak about their use of SAS and/or development of a SAS application(s) at three or more off-site events a year are candidates for the certificate.
- SAS-hosted Web seminar or video: Instructors and faculty who want to use SAS technology in their classes frequently don’t have time to learn SAS themselves. SAS will assist you with "educating the educators." SAS has found that Webcasts, Web seminars and BetterManagement.com Web conferences, CDs and video conferencing are well-suited to the busy schedules of most of academicians.
- Conference paper: Presentations at SAS international, regional and professional conferences can provide an opportunity for you to share your experience using SAS and/or developing a SAS application(s).
Publishing
- SAS success stories: SAS communication specialists and editors will work with you to both develop the subject matter and design an article that best showcases your use of SAS.
- Technical white paper: Work with SAS to create and disseminate technical briefs, monographs and white papers about your development of a SAS-based application and/or experience with SAS technology.
- Case study: SAS will assist you to develop a case study outlining your implementation of SAS tools and the industrial implications of the work.
- SAS Scholars Leadership Library contributions: SAS seeks contributions from statisticians in the form of monographs, books, professional publications, lectures, dissertations and other application and research papers dealing with statistics. Ownership and copyright is retained by the author(s) or sponsoring institution.
Training and certification
- SAS certification site: As a SAS certification site, your institution will work with SAS to assist individuals on campus become SAS Certified Professionals.
- SAS guest lectures: SAS Education Division will work with you to provide on-site classroom instruction by guest lecturers.
- Data set contributors: Educators have trouble finding data sets suitable for teaching specific concepts in statistics. SAS Higher Education Consulting has assembled a Data Set Library for public use. Your contribution to the library, along with a minimal amount of identification material, will help educators address this challenge.
Feedback activities
- Feedback for R&D: Since our inception in 1976, SAS has relied heavily on individuals in higher education as technology development partners. By providing feedback to SAS R&D on product testing and implementation in a standardized form, as specified by SAS, you will benefit the worldwide community of SAS users.
- Feedback for publications or training: SAS built its reputation on listening and responding to customer feedback. Academic feedback has confirmed that the academic community relies on SAS publications and training just as much as SAS software.
