SAS® Math Stretch app builds foundation for future math learning through simple numerical concepts
The SAS® Math Stretch app is available now on the App Store for iPad®. Designed for grades K-5, SAS Math Stretch teaches students how to think about numbers in new ways associated with success in higher-order math, such as Algebra. SAS Math Stretch is the latest addition to a growing portfolio of free resources for teaching and learning from SAS.
SAS Math Stretch promotes the concept of numeracy, the ability to reason and to apply simple numerical concepts. This approach improves basic math skills, which has been linked to higher performance on standardized math tests by high school seniors.
In findings published January 2, 2013, in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on high school seniors showed a significant link between their brain responses while solving extremely basic, single-digit calculation problems and standard scores on the PSAT.
"SAS Math Stretch focuses on skills that foster long-term success in all levels of math," said Scott McQuiggan, Director, SAS Mobile Education. "Math competency builds students' confidence and expands their educational and career opportunities."
Today's announcement honors Pi Day, a global celebration of mathematics. SAS Math Stretch activities target counting, number relations and operations, and telling and manipulating time. Activities offer both practice and quiz modes, while settings allow students, parents and teachers to control the difficulty level of each activity independently. Practice sessions and completed quizzes can easily be shared with parents and teachers.
The SAS Math Stretch app is available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.AppStore.com.
