Filling the analytical talent gap
UMN gives students a boost with SAS® Business Analytics
Huge amounts of data are collected every minute – transactional data, Web and mobile interactions, warranty claims information, financial data. And more and more businesses are using analytics to uncover the ties between those sources. The increased reliance on analytics creates a huge demand for analytical talent. Universities like the Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) are helping meet this demand.
When UMN began getting requests from the banks in Indonesia for information technology graduates with SAS skills, it looked to SAS for help. UMN soon added SAS Business Analytics and SAS® Enterprise Guide® to its statistics major. In addition to free software, SAS provided students with real data sets so they could learn to build reports and models.
“SAS not only gave us an unlimited software license, but also provided training for the academics, SAS books, curriculum development assistance, online learning and teaching materials for the classroom,” says Wira Munggana, Head of UMN’s Information System Department.
Even academics with no previous experience with SAS can be effective lecturers after attending the Train the Trainer course that SAS provides. It’s an intense five days of lectures and hands-on training in SAS programming and SAS Enterprise Guide. The training also helps the academics develop appropriate curriculum materials.
With analytics’ popularity and the high demand for analytical talent, we are optimistic about the success of our graduates.

Setting their students apart
“We’ve added a one-hour required course in SAS programming to the Statistics subject for a bachelor’s degree,” says Wira. “By adding business and analytics knowledge to the curriculum, UMN is providing its graduates with skills that help them stand out from other applicants. In the future, we’re planning to include SAS® Enterprise Miner™ for Business Intelligence subject which covers Data Mining.”
UMN’s Department of Information System provides its students with more choices for specialization or concentration in data analytics. “We believe that data analytics specialization is rarely found in an Information and Communications Technology-based course,” Wira added. “So this is one of the differentiators for our graduates. With analytics’ popularity and the high demand for analytical talent, we are optimistic about the success of our graduates where they can better communicate with and serve their line-of-business users.”
