How long have you been using SAS®?

11 years.

What SAS products have you used in the past? What products and solutions are you currently using?

SAS/STAT®

What is a problem you have solved using SAS?

I have focused on investigating how where we live, work and play influences our dietary and physical activity behavior. This involves using various types of regression and principal component analyses in SAS to categorize the almost 75,000 neighborhoods (census tracts) in the US by their sociodemographic characteristics. Then we link those characteristics to empirically derived dietary patterns and dietary guidelines-based standards.

What is the most innovative way you have used SAS?

I've used SAS to identify 40,000 retailers that sell healthier foods from two databases that contain half a million records. This means using macros and various functions to efficiently match stores in the two databases that have multiple spelling variations in their names and addresses, and inaccuracies in the geocoding.

What is your most memorable SAS moment?

Discovering how to use ODS output to reformat odds ratios and 95% confidence limits so I would never have to type in pages and pages of estimates in tables again. That was a beautiful day!
